Schwanenwik on the Alster
The Schwanenwik is one of the most beautiful streets in Hamburg. It runs along the Außenalster, between St. Georg and Uhlenhorst, and connects two of the city’s most desirable residential areas. It owes its name to the Alsterswan Bay, where the Hamburg alster swans traditionally wintered – the word “Wik” comes from the Scandinavian language and means bay or shore.
The street was built between 1853 and 1858 as a connection route and received its current name in 1888. Today it is characterized by representative old buildings, the Literaturhaus Hamburg at Schwanenwik 38 – a listed commercial villa from 1865 – and the direct view of the Außenalster.
